Why LRBT?
LRBT hospitals are very effectively run
One of the striking aspects of the hospitals is their simplicity and orderliness. They have been designed for effectiveness. It is common to see chaos in public services in South Asia, but the effective system used at the hospitals ensures that the majority of those admitted are seen to the same day.

The focus of the hospitals is treating curable eye diseases. This is an achievable target that provides significant improvement in daily life for the patient within days; hence the apt description ‘restoring sight - transforming lives’.

Low costs, but high success rates
The administrative cost of supporting the hospitals through The Graham Layton Trust is under 2%. The cost to replace a cataract is under £15 with a success rate of over 95%.

LRBT hospitals have an enviable reputation
Many who come to the hospitals have travelled substantial distances, because they value the care provided by LRBT.

The medical staff appreciates the opportunity to work within a LRBT hospital, reflecting the respect it has within the medical community. Not only do they provide treatment for those who are blind or have impaired vision, they are also developing top ophthalmologists who can serve elsewhere in the country.

The LRBT hospitals set a very high standard for Pakistani hospitals, encouraging the improvement of the Pakistani medical service generally.

All patients are given a talk on general hygiene and basic eye diseases. And all Intra Ocular Lenses (IOL) are provided free.

The lack of discrimination
The same level of care and attention is available for all patients, rich and poor, young and old, men and women, on a first come - first served basis. There is no discrimination on grounds of religion, gender, class or ethnicity. Women and minorities form part of the staff at LRBT and have full access to job opportunities. Free diagnosis, and treatment, is available for all.

The equipment used in the hospitals is modern and up to date, reflecting the determination of the founders not to provide second-best treatment for the poor.
